I have been part of the design team for several steerable loudspeaker arrays. These arrays are used as part of long range hail and warning systems developed by my colleagues and I at Penn State. These acoustic arrays can be electronically steered to an angle based on the feedback from a camera on a pan-tilt mount. They can convey intelligible voice messages to people at ranges of beyond 1 mile and can be used to send warning information such as entering restricted space, or nearby threats of inclement weather approaching.
For more information on these systems, see my publications page. We have written several journal articles and conference papers on the subject.
